I fell in love with the Colorado River on a family trip to the Grand Canyon when I was 17. Since then, Josh and I have taken several trips to the Colorado, and each time we hiked. Our last trip to visit the mighty river on our honeymoon didn't go quite as planned, and we decided that we should try seeing the river from the water. So, while in Vegas, we planned out a kayaking trip down the Colorado, just under the Hoover Dam. I have to say, boating through the desert is simply amazing. Being on the water, you feel more connected to the landscape around you, and there's always a place to cool off! We floated down the stretch of the river through Black Canyon, and there are tons of hot springs to stop at, sea caves to explore from your boat, and quite a bit of wildlife. We saw several groups of bighorn sheep grazing (I've been wanting to see some in the wild for years now!), and there are some impressively large fish in the warmer flows of the river. Our trip has inspired plans to kayak the rest of the Colorado with our own boats and equipment (Josh likened our rental gear to paddling a barge with a 2x4... yeah.). I can't wait for the next installment of river exploration!
We put in just below the Hoover Dam. It's an amazing engineering feat, regardless of how you feel about the dam itself.
Desert wildflowers were everywhere.
The Hoover Dam holds back Lake Mead. It's always strange to me to see a huge lake in the middle of the desert. With a sandy beach no less. Wild.
Happy Wednesday! Tomorrow's back to weddings!
